Rome With A View

Article first published in October/November 2021 issue.

The rooftop panoramic from the remodeled Hotel de la Ville will reignite your passion for the Eternal City.

Less than a five-minute walk from the Spanish Steps, the Hotel de la Ville palace was once a sojourn on the Grand Tour as young male aristocrats in the 18th century made their way across Europe. A journey of cultural enlightenment, Italy, and Rome in particular, was seen as the ultimate destination for its art and architecture.

The structure was transformed into a hotel in the early 1920s and nearly a century later, it would undergo a complete modernization with a nod to its Grand Tour roots. Under Rocco Forte Hotels management since 2019, the complete redesign of the property was a collaboration between Olga Polizzi and renowned Roman architect Tommaso Ziffer. The playful 104 rooms (28-35 sqm) and suites up to 60 sqm that are “works of art” in their own right showcase contemporary furniture and sumptuous fabrics. Lavish marble bathrooms come outfitted with an exclusive range of Irene Forte Skincare products while many of the rooms and suites feature French balconies or terraces.

The new Hotel de la Ville’s iconic location in the heart of the Eternal City is only one of the perks of the 5-star accommodation. “The confluence of classical Roman romance and contemporary cool, sweeping city views, buzzing drinking and dining spots and fresh, zestful design make for Rome’s most exciting new arrival,” says Rocco Forte Hotels, the British hotel group with 14 locations across Europe, beach resorts in Sicily and Apulia, and recent openings in Saudi Arabia and China.

Along with its street-side Sicilian bistro, there is the Michelin-star Mosaico restaurant which is open for lunch and dinner. The extraordinary cuisine by chef Fulvio Pierangelini is crafted using local, seasonal produce and “inspired by the myriad cultures that made up the Roman Empire, expertly bringing together Italian cuisine with culinary flourishes from Africa, the Middle East and across Europe.”

The elegant Julep Herbal & Vermouth Bar offers a drinks menu of individual, inventive concoctions and infusions inspired by the 13th-century spice route that began in Venice and wound its way across the continent. Signature cocktails (€21) include The Julep—Beluga vodka, roman mint, white peach and champagne.

But the golden jewel of the hotel is the Cielo rooftop bar and its glorious sweeping views of Rome and its 3000 years of history and architecture. This is why you are at the Hotel de la Ville, enjoy it, breathe it, live it.

With all that rooftop sightseeing, a visit to the luxurious De la Ville Spa is well merited. Balance the mind and body with exclusive Irene Forte Skincare products and made-in- Italy Pietro Simone Skincare, which offer “a peptide-rich, age-defying” line of facial products.

And let’s be honest, if you are going to stay in the Eternal City, you might as well have the glowing skin to go with it.
