Monkeypox Vaccination In Monaco As Three Cases Confirmed

The Monaco government announced today that there have been three people, including one resident, who have been treated for monkeypox.

Their press release said that all have been cured “without any complications to report.” As well it notes that “taking into account the recommendations issued by international organizations” Monaco has acquired an undisclosed amount of stock of the Bavarian Nordic’s JYNNEOS vaccine “to take care of its resident population.”

The first symptoms of monkeypox are fever, muscle pain, fatigue, possible swelling of the glands, then a widespread rash. Diagnosis is confirmed by a PCR test. “Most often, monkeypox heals in two to four weeks,” the government stated. “A person is contagious as soon as skin symptoms appear, otherwise there is no risk of transmission.”

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the virus can spread to anyone “through close, personal, often skin-to-skin contact, including direct contact with monkeypox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with monkeypox or touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with monkeypox.”

Additionally, the virus can spread through intimate contact (any type of sexual penetration) as well as hugging, massage, and kissing. The government confirmed “more than 90% of cases are within the framework of sexually transmitted infections.”

The vaccine is now available to adults at risk from contact with a monkeypox patient or as a preventive measure, on a voluntary basis, for adults in highly exposed groups.

Residents concerned can contact the Monegasque Screening Center located at the Princess Grace Hospital Center on +377 97 98 84 12.
