The Monaco government and National Council will meet in September to discuss details of a trial free bus service for residents from October to November 2022.
“This will finally make it possible to find a pragmatic and definitive solution to this debate, on the usefulness or not of this measure, which seems to us to be in line with the challenges of our time,” commented National Council president Stéphane Valeri.
Since the beginning of its mandate five years ago, the National Council has been pushing for this solution as a means to alleviate traffic congestion in the Principality and combat carbon pollution.
The meeting in September will define the criteria necessary to enter the test phase and elected representatives are hoping for an attractive enough offer that will encourage residents to change their habits and use local bus transport.
National Council members will also point out that additional measures must, in the future, accompany free bus access in order for the plan to successful. This includes the creation of new bus lanes, prioritizing traffic lights for approaching buses and a higher frequency of buses to absorb the increase in demand.
