Sport legends return for football charity cup.
The second edition of the Fight Aids Cup brought big names in sport to the field in Monaco for a friendly game of football. It was a family affair with Princess Stephanie’s Team Cirque FC taking on Team Barbagiuans de Monaco, an association founded by her son, Louis Ducruet.
Ducruet, who is listed in the 2021 Forbes Monaco 30 Under 30, is president of Les Barbagiuans de Monaco, a new adventure he took on with the ambition to continue the football team created by Uncle Prince Albert more than four decades ago. Injecting new life into the historical match, Ducruet changed the name to the FIGHT AIDS Cup but kept the strong connection between sport and values in the Principality.
The charity match was played on January 24 in support of Fight Aids Monaco, the association chaired by Princess Stephanie, who is also president of the Monte- Carlo International Circus Festival. The event at Stade Louis II started off with “clowning around” on the pitch before official team photos were taken with Prince Albert and his sister.
The light-hearted ambience continued when the princely siblings ceremoniously kicked- off the game. Ducruet played in the first half before being replaced by François Modesto. Fans were delighted to watch Monegasque F1 driver Charles Leclerc make an appearance alongside football legends Ludovic Giuly, Fernando Morientes, Didier Deschamps, Youri Djorkaeff and Italian striker Luca Toni, who played for Bayern Munich and Fiorentina.
Although Cirque FC dominated the first half, at halftime it was a scoreless game. But “to the delight” of captain Sébastien Frey and Princess Stephanie, Cirque FC would go on to claim victory with a 2-0 win over Les Barbagiuans.
Former Paris Saint- Germain player Laure Boulleau, the only female in the match, said. “It was a pleasure to take part in this event, in a team made up of football legends. I felt privileged to be able to play against players who made me dream and made me want to play football.
“Being here for Fight Aids Monaco, a good cause...that is what motivated us to give our best.”
