Five Monaco Golfers Help Team Europe Bring Home Augural Cup in St Moritz Celebrity Tournament.
As a spinoff to the biannual U.S. Monaco Celebrity Golf Cup golf tournament, founded and organized by chairman Susan Feaster in 2016, the first St. Moritz U.S. Celebrity Golf Cup for the Ryder Cup Trust edition took place in July at the Engadine Golf Club.
Over three days from July 22-25, Team U.S.A. and Team Europe battled it out over Four Ball Better Ball Match Play, Scramble Match Play format and Single Match Play.
Monaco residents Alex Vik (Captain Team Europe and former captain, Harvard’s Men’s Golf Team, Harvard Hall of Fame), Gustav Vik (Partner Vik Vineyards & Vik Resorts), Roberto Giorgi (Chairman, Fraser Yacht), Illia Melia (Russian Real Estate Tycoon), Bruno Andreis (Creator of the Swedish golf model) were part of Team Europe, who won with 22.5 points to 18.5 points for the Americans.
“This was a fun and a really competitive match,” says Alex Vik. “Fortunately the Europeans won even though on paper the U.S team looked very strong, with many young pro athletes. I think most of them want to be selected for the team again to come to Monaco next year to try to win back the cup.”
American Football and America’s Best Pro Athlete Golfer Josh Scobee, American Frisbee champion Brodie Smith, NBL player Mike Conley Jr., «The Bachelor» actor Ben Higgins, The Golf Whisperer Jerry King, German composer Howard Carpendale and Ilija Djurdjevic, whose long drive flew 430 meters (the length of almost five football pitches) were part of the group of 40 players.
Ian Randell, CEO PGAs of Europe, brought the Ryder Cup Trophy to St. Moritz, and as part of the European Development Trust of the Ryder Cup, an auction of holidays and selected art—including a Picasso—raised €45,000 (CHF 50,000) at the event’s Black Tie Gala at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.
The second event in St. Moritz will take place June 25 to July 1, 2021— with a Winter Golf Kick-Off—the first ever Ryder Cup Trust event on a frozen lake—earlier in the year from February 23 to 26. It remains to be seen whether the 2021 Welcome BBQ will surpass this year’s “party of a lifetime.”
“There were a number of very convivial social events, with wives and girlfriends included, full of camaraderie that bodes well for the future matches. I made lots of new friends,” Vik comments.
The 2020 edition of the Monaco U.S. Celebrity Golf Cup presented by Prince Albert, and in partnership with Ryder Cup Trust, takes place June 23-28. There’s a 2022 Asia event also in the pipeline.
